One of the tests of leadership is to recognize a problem before it becomes an emergency.

I am so grateful for the team of leaders we have at FFC and I’m especially thankful for a team of Elders who serve as under-shepherds of the Lord Jesus Christ.

This Sunday I’ll complete what was supposed to be a five-week series from the book of 1st Peter.  Oh well, what’s an extra four weeks?

I’ve been inspired by my personal study of this book and I’ve really enjoyed delivering these nine messages.  This week’s message, Leaders Who Follow Christ,” comes from 1 Peter 5:1-4.

1To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder, a witness of Christ’s sufferings and one who also will share in the glory to be revealed: 2Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers — not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve; 3not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. 4And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.

The Sandhill crane is a very large bird that can fly great distances across continents.  These unique birds have three remarkable qualities.  First, while flying they rotate and share leadership; second, they only select leaders who can handle the turbulence; and third, those following the leader all honk their affirmation during flight.  What a great illustration for the church.  Like the Sandhill cranes, we need leaders who share in leadership, leaders who can handle the turbulent times of life, and churches that faithfully affirm and encourage those who lead.

I hope to see you this Sunday in worship.
