Letter of the Law

Galatians 3:15-29

One of my favorite places on earth is Colorado.  I’ve had the opportunity to travel to a lot of different places.  There are, of course, lots of other places I’d love to see.  But I’m always fighting the urge to head back to Colorado.

My constant desire to find an excuse to make my way back to that Rocky Mountain air reminded me of a story I read once about a ski resort in Breckenridge.  One winter, the ski resort posted signs instructing skiers to keep off a certain slope.  The signs – large and distinct – said, “DANGER!  OUT OF BOUNDS!”  Despite the warnings, however, several skiers went into the area.  Shortly after they ignored the signs, the mountains began to rumble with the sound of a half-mile wide avalanche.  It buried four of the trespassers beneath tons of snow and rock.  The tragedy never would have happened if the signs had been heeded.

Just like this warning, the law was given to God’s people as a protection from many things.  Even in some instances, from themselves.  I’ve had many conversations with believers who have pondered the importance, the relevance, or even the necessity to continue to be aware of the law that was given to God’s people in the Old Testament.  After all, as we are told in the pages of Scripture, Jesus came to fulfill the law.  But the law still has purpose in the believer’s life, doesn’t it?  It leaves many asking “Why was the law given?”

I pray that you will join me this coming Sunday as we dive into these very questions.  I believe chapter 3 of Paul’s letter to the Galatians helps us answer that question and helps us see that the law is still important to the believer and is complementary to the promises of God, not contrary.

I’m excited to worship with you Sunday, and looking forward to seeing you all.

Grateful,

Pastor Brandon
