“No One Can Tame The Tongue”

We all have a problem and it’s situated between our noses and our chins.

James has a lot to say about the tongue and I believe it’s because he wants us to remember that the gift of speech comes from God.  The first thing we learn about God from the Scriptures is that He speaks – into the darkness God said, “Let there be light.” The Bible tells us we’ve been created in God’s image.  Part of that image is the ability to speak.  One of the first things God called Adam to do was to name the beasts of the field and the birds of the air.  Now it didn’t take long for Satan to tempt Adam and Eve with speech.  His whispers caused them to doubt the truthfulness of God’s words.  And since the Fall, the human tongue has been a battleground between the forces of good and evil. It is with an eye to this battleground that James challenges the immature Christian whose faith remains childish and, consequently, whose tongue remains untamed.  According to James, real faith changes things – even the way we speak. I hope you’ll take the time to read James 3:1-12 before you get to church this Sunday.  Here again, James describes for us, regarding the words that come out of our mouths, what real faith looks like!
