“Where Were You?”

The Bible is filled with questions God poses to people.  The one above was posed when God broke His silence and began a conversation with Job. We find it in Job 38:1-4.

Then the Lord answered Job from the whirlwind: 2 Who is this that questions my wisdom with such ignorant words? 3 Brace yourself like a man, because I have some questions for you, and you must answer them. 4 Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell me if you know so much.

In case you are new to the story of Job, let me give you the basics. Through no fault of his own, he lost his seven sons, three daughters, 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, 500 female donkeys, and all his servants – in the span of a single day.

If that weren’t enough, he then came down with something between skin cancer and shingles. And to top it all off, his closest friends showed up to blame him for days regarding his situation.

Many read the book of Job hoping to find answers to why humans suffer. Why God allows good people to endure difficult and painful things. However, the book of Job doesn’t really answer these questions.

So what was the intent of God’s question to Job?

That’s what we’ll be considering this coming Sunday. I hope you can join us as we allow God to pose the same question to us.
