“Learning to Live in God’s Rest”

Last week’s message was based on Matthew 11:28 where Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”

In that verse Jesus reveals three things:

  • His Audience: All who are weary and carry heavy burdens
  • His Invitation: Come to Me
  • His Promise: I will give you rest

What is God’s rest?

To many, the rest of God, is nothing more than trying to disconnect from the craziness of life for a few weeks each year before returning to the chaotic grind for another year. Is that the rest of God? Or is the rest of God something else, something more?

It’s into this question Jesus finishes His statement in Matthew 11:29-30, “Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”

In those two verses, Jesus reveals five things we must accept to live in God’s rest: His call, His method, His teaching, His promise, and His directive.

This is what we’ll look at this coming Sunday as we seek to enter into the promise of His rest.

Still learning to rest,
