The Basic of the Church

I’ve appreciated our last two weeks on the Christian basics of prayer and service. A refresher on the basics is always good.

This coming Sunday we’re going to focus on the basics of the church. I love the church and I love church people. You know, some very funny things can happen around churches.

Like the story of Pastor Jim Dunn who, along with his wife Gladys, were serving a little rural church in the mountains of Tennessee. Gladys was very friendly and would often move around the sanctuary personally greeting everyone both before and after morning worship.

One morning, Pastor Jim got really wound-up and preached a sermon that went well over his allotted time. Many in the congregation started to nod off to sleep. When the service ended, Gladys noticed a visitor on the back row who was just starting to wake up. She went over to greet the man and said, “Good morning, I’m Gladys Dunn.” The man rubbed his eyes and said, “Me too, that was a long one.” Ha! I like that story.

I do hope you can join us this week as we continue our series on Christian Basics. In prep for Sunday, please consider Acts 9:31 and what it has to say about healthy churches that are fulfilling their basic purpose.

The church then had peace throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria, and it became stronger as the believers lived in the fear of the Lord. And with the encouragement of the Holy Spirit, it also grew in numbers.

I’m looking forward to seeing you at Sunday worship!
