Sermon Synopsis

For over 35 years I’ve wanted to play the bass guitar. I was so serious about it that several years back I bought a bass convinced the time to learn was now! Guess what? To this day I still can’t play a one scale or one cool lick! I think I know why the bass guitar remains unknown to me – I’ve been too focused on other things and my “interest” has never translated into action. On a far more serious note, there are a number of Christians who’ve been in church for years but still know very little about the Holy Spirit. As a result, He remains a mystery to them, almost like an “unknown God.” They’ve heard a preacher mention His name and maybe sung about Him in a hymn or chorus but they’ve never really inquired as to Who He is, what He came to do, where He dwells, when He arrived on the scene, and why He was sent. Between now and the end of May we’re going to focus our attention on the Holy Spirit. Hopefully, in becoming better acquainted with Him, we’ll all experience more of His presence and His power in our lives.

Matthew 3:16–17

16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; 17 and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

John 14:16

16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,

2 Chronicles 7:1

7:1 As soon as Solomon finished his prayer, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the LORD filled the temple.

1 Corinthians 3:16

16 Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you?

Luke 24:32

32 They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?”

Acts 4:31

31 And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.

Malachi 3:3

He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, and they will bring offerings in righteousness to the LORD.

Matthew 3:11–12

11 “I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”
